At -25°C, Teknologi Becomes Field Infrastruktur, Not a Convenience.✎ Edit

I have trekked through both Northern Pakistan and Northern China, usually with family, and I tend to see those trips as live field tests of how well digital systems work outside the lab.

Both are extreme environments, but Northern China is the harshest field site I have operated in so far - temperatures around -25°C, heavy snow, and almost the entire landscape masked in white.

Yet every year-end, tourists still move through the region in large numbers.

Northern Pakistan, by comparison, becomes far less reachable during the same season.

For me, the biggest difference is not the terrain.

It is the depth of technology adoption.

In Northern China, digital infrastructure does not stop at the city edge.

It extends into remote villages, forests and mountain passes.

With little more than a smartphone and WeChat, we could coordinate logistics, receive schedules, follow live arrangements and move through extremely remote areas without lengthy negotiations or manual coordination overhead.

Everything ran on the same connected operational layer.

Even at -25°C, the phones stayed essential field gear. From what I saw, the Android devices we carried survived repeated drops into the snow and kept running - no warm room required for recovery.

In an environment like this, technology is not a convenience layer.

Kebolehpercayaan, connectivity and access become critical subsystems of mobility and safety.

One incident particularly stuck with me.

We were staying in a very remote mountain village, comparable to a deeply rural settlement in Malaysia.

Later, our host unexpectedly handed us a video of our own activities in the mountains.

We had no idea who recorded it, or how the footage had been relayed back to the village.

That moment showed me how deeply connected the local ecosystem already was.

That is what real digital transformation looks like in production.

Not another dashboard.

Not another office app.

But technology extending what humans can physically do in places that used to be hard to reach.

And I believe Northern Pakistan could eventually move in the same direction.

As China and Pakistan continue improving connectivity through the Karakoram region, better roads, communications backhaul, digital payment rails, platforms and supporting infrastructure could completely reshape how people move through Northern Pakistan.

The lesson from Northern China is simple:

Teknologi should not only make smart cities smarter.

It should make remote places lebih selamat, more connected and more accessible.

That is where technology becomes genuinely transformative.
