A decision based on the individual
Joint replacement may be considered when hip or knee symptoms substantially affect daily life despite appropriate non-surgical care. The decision should cover expected benefits, important risks, alternatives, implant considerations and personal goals. Suitability and likely recovery vary.
Prepare health and home
Review medicines, allergies, dental or skin infections, smoking, diabetes control and support at home with the clinical team. Follow only the fasting and medicine instructions provided for your operation. Prepare clear walking routes, frequently used items at a safe height and transport for discharge.
Pre-operative exercises may be recommended, but they should match your pain and ability. Do not begin an intense programme immediately before surgery without advice.
Recovery needs active participation
Follow instructions for wound care, movement, walking aids, exercises and blood-clot prevention. Progress is not identical for every patient. Keep follow-up appointments and ask before returning to driving, work or higher-risk activity.
