Screening is for people without symptoms
Cervical screening looks for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) and, depending on the programme, cell changes that could develop into cervical cancer. HPV is common and a positive result does not mean that cancer is present. Screening intervals and eligibility depend on age, history and the current national programme.
During and after the test
A trained healthcare professional gently takes a sample from the cervix. The test is brief, although some people find it uncomfortable. Tell the professional if you are anxious, have pain, are pregnant, have had previous trauma, or need the procedure paused.
Follow the instructions in your result letter or clinical advice. An abnormal result may lead to repeat testing or colposcopy; attending follow-up is an important part of prevention.
Screening does not investigate symptoms
Bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods or after menopause, persistent unusual discharge, or pelvic pain needs clinical assessment even if a previous screening result was normal.
