Demam kanak-kanak

Fever is common in children and often follows a viral illness. KPMC pakar kanak-kanaks see children from the newborn period through adolescence, including walk-in clinic care.

Overview

A fever means the body temperature is higher than usual. The child’s alertness, drinking and breathing matter as much as the number on the thermometer.

Common symptoms

  • Warm skin and raised temperature
  • Irritability or sleepiness
  • Poor feeding
  • Cough, rash or vomiting may accompany fever

Possible causes

  • Common viral infections
  • Ear, throat or urine infections
  • Other childhood illnesses
  • Recently after some vaccinations

When to seek medical help

  • A baby under 3 months with fever — seek urgent care
  • The child is floppy, hard to wake, or has a non-blanching rash
  • Difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, or a seizure
  • You are worried — contact a pakar kanak-kanak or Kecemasan

Diagnosis

A pakar kanak-kanak examines the child and may request laboratory tests available at KPMC when needed.

Rawatan

Many fevers are self-limiting. Rawatan targets the cause and the child’s comfort. Do not give medicines except as advised by a clinician or pharmacist.
