Gallstones

Overview
Gallstones form in the gallbladder. Some cause no symptoms. Others trigger biliary colic or inflammation that needs surgical review.
Common symptoms
- Pain in the upper right or middle abdomen, often after fatty food
- Pain spreading to the back or right shoulder
- Nausea
- Fever or yellowing of the eyes — seek urgent care
Possible causes
- Stones in the gallbladder
- Inflammation (cholecystitis)
- A stone blocking a bile duct
When to seek medical help
- Severe abdominal pain that does not settle
- Fever with abdominal pain
- Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes), dark urine
- Persistent vomiting
Diagnosis
Ultrasound is commonly used and is available at KPMC. Blood tests may support the assessment. Your surgeon decides which tests are needed.
Treatment
Symptom-free stones are sometimes watched. Symptomatic stones may be treated with gallbladder removal (including laparoscopic cholecystectomy) when a surgeon recommends it.
